Doors Open is a celebration of community heritage. It provides residents with an exciting opportunity to explore unique and sometimes hidden heritage sites, some of which have never been open to the public.
The Doors Open program began in Glasgow, Scotland in 1990. It was followed by European Heritage days in countries across Europe. Now over 48 countries participate in Doors Open. In 2000, Toronto was the first North American city to host a Doors Open event. It was quickly followed by Doors Open Ontario – the first province-wide event of its kind in Canada and has attracted millions of people across Ontario since its launch in February 2002.
In its first year, Doors Open Ontario program had over 40 communities participate in 17 events, attracting over 300,000 visitors to heritage sites. In 2003, more than 130 communities, involved in 27 Doors Open events, opened hundreds of sites to the public and attracted over 400,000 visitors.
Whitchurch-Stouffville joined the list of participating Ontario communities in 2004. The event is organized by the Whitchurch-Stouffville Museum with the help of the Whitchurch-Stouffville Doors Open Committee and numerous volunteers.
Doors Open Whitchurch-Stouffville takes place the 1st Saturday each June.
